At Local Eyes Optometrists we take a genuine interest in our patients, with appropriate appointment times to ensure examinations aren’t rushed, encouraging patients to ask questions, and be involved in the decision making process. With the latest technology in eye testing equipment, and extensive industry experience, skills and knowledge, we provide our patients with trusted, and honest advice.

  • Home Visits

As part of our commitment to provide a flexible delivery of our service, home visit appointments for yourself or a family member are available should you not be able to attend the practice. Please speak to one of our friendly team members to discuss your requirements and arrange a home visit.

    Children's Vision

We take a holistic approach to your child’s vision and aim to make their eye test as fun and relaxed as possible. A child’s vision is not just about what they can see on an eye chart, it is also about a child being able to interpret and understand what they are seeing. Any difficulties in vision and focusing can have a significant impact on their learning, confidence, and behaviour in the classroom.

  • Fashion Forward Frames

Your new glasses can be fashionable as well as functional. We love stocking frames that are unique, funky and flattering, and have exclusive designs in store, not available anywhere else in Mackay.

In addition to our comprehensive eye examinations, testing vision, and screening of abnormalities and eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma and age related macular degeneration, we provide a full-scope of optometry services:

Diabetic eye examinations

“Kelly has been my family’s optometrist for many years now and I would trust no one else with my family’s eye health. Kelly is exceptional at what she does, and goes above and beyond for her patients. She is particularly good with children and creates a fun and relaxed environment where children feel at ease having their eyes tested. My children love her and look forward to having their eyes tested each year. If you are looking for an optometrist that your whole family will love, you will find no one better than Kelly.”

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. We bulk bill comprehensive eye examinations for all our patients. We also have some impressive technology in our practice that allows us to scan certain parts of your eyes and see more than is possible with standard testing equipment. This allows us to detect things sooner and look for and monitor changes more accurately. As we want to offer our patients the best standard of care, we feel this is an important service to offer. These scans are optional but not covered by Medicare, and if you choose to have them done at your appointment there is an out-of-pocket cost for them.

  • Yes, absolutely. Optometrists have special equipment to be able to get a much closer look at your eyes than most general practitioners. The optometrists at Local Eyes are also therapeutically qualified, which means they can remove corneal foreign bodies and prescribe medications to treat eye infections.

  • As a general rule, you should have your eyes tested every 2 years if you are under 65, and every 12 months if you are over 65. Your optometrist will however recommend a review period based on their results and we will send you a reminder when your next appointment is due.

  • Yes. An eye test is so much more than just being able to read letters on an eye chart. During a comprehensive eye examination, we also look for signs of abnormalities and eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. We can also offer advice on how to keep your eyes healthy and seeing well now and into the future.

  • It is important to us that we offer adequate appointment times. A full comprehensive eye examination takes 30 to 45 minutes. This allows us to conduct a thorough examination, properly explain to you all the tests we perform as well as their results, and ultimately find the right solutions for you.

  • No. Please bring along your glasses or history about your eyes (if you have any) but you do not need a referral to make an appointment to see us.

  • We are happy to see babies, toddlers, and children of all ages. We are still able to obtain useful information about what a child can see and how they use their eyes even if they don’t know their numbers and letters. It is generally recommended that your child’s first eye test is done around the age of 3, but sooner if you have concerns. We then recommend another checkup before they start school, and every 2 years after that unless advised by your optometrist.

  • Yes. We are fully set up to claim optical benefits from all private health funds through HICAPS. You just need to have your card with you so we can process your claim on the spot.

  • Our frames start from $95, and we offer single vision frame and lens packages – one pair from $145 or two pairs from $195. Lenses and prescriptions can however be complex and there are lots of different factors to consider in your glasses. Not all frames, lenses, and coatings are created equal and we prefer to discuss your needs with you first to find a personalised solution for you at a competitive price.

  • Yes. We offer a range of no gap glasses for single vision, bifocals, and multifocals for all health funds with optical cover.

  • Provided it is in good condition, then absolutely yes. Our friendly and experienced staff will be able to advise if your frame is durable enough to withstand the lens fitting process.

  • We offer free frames from a select range for pensioners when they purchase their lenses through us. We also waive the fitting fees for pensioners purchasing new lenses and using their own frames. Unfortunately, we do not offer glasses through the government MASS scheme.
